      "abstract": "This study analyzes the relationship between the East and the West in\r\naddressing the issue of stereotypes in the film Merindu Cahaya de Amstel. This\r\nfilm is of particular interest for analysis and research because it tells the story of\r\na Dutch woman who converts to Islam and begins wearing the hijab. Her\r\nexperience of wearing the hijab in a predominantly non-Muslim Western society\r\npresents a unique religious experience. This phenomenon can open the door to a\r\ncritical examination of stereotypes that have long been entrenched and have been\r\nconstructed, shaped, maintained, and challenged in Western society. This study\r\nwill discuss the forms of stereotypes depicted in the film Merindu Cahaya de\r\nAmstel and how the film challenges the stereotypes presented within it.\r\nThis study employs a qualitative methodology. The data consist of film\r\nnarratives, dialogue, and documentary footage. The data obtained were then\r\nanalyzed using the concepts of stereotypes, representations, and the process of\r\nmeaning-making. This study draws on Stuart Hall’s theory of stereotypical\r\nrepresentation, specifically the reflective and constructionist approaches, with a\r\nparticular focus on stereotypes.\r\nThe results of this study indicate that the film Merindu Cahaya de Amstel\r\nnot only serves as a form of entertainment and addresses stereotypes about\r\nwomen who wear the hijab in the West, transforming perceptions of women who\r\nwear the hijab. Initially, the hijab was viewed as a symbol of backwardness,\r\nunderdevelopment, and oppression, but this film seeks to reverse that perception.\r\nThe film portrays the hijab as an identity, a conscious choice, and a spiritual\r\nsymbol that empowers the main character. While Islam was often perceived as\r\nclosed-minded and irrational, the film instead depicts it as a path in the search for\r\nthe meaning of life. By utilizing Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, Max\r\nMüller’s views on religious prejudice, and Entman’s framing theory, this study\r\ndemonstrates that film can serve as a medium to challenge and transform these\r\nstereotypes, open up spaces for intercultural dialogue, and foster new\r\nunderstanding between the East and the West.",
