However, exegesis, as an intellectual product, does not emerge in a neutral space; rather, it is influenced by the exegete’s scholarly background, social experiences, and ideological and political contexts. In the Indonesian context, these dynamics can be observed in Tafsir Al-Huda: Tafsir Qur’an Basa Jawi, written by Bakri Syahid during the New Order era in Indonesia. Several interpretations in this work demonstrate tendencies aligned with the discourse on development, security stability, and the reinforcement of state ideology—all of which were central to the New Order’s political agenda. Therefore, this study aims to examine how Bakri Syahid interprets Qur’anic verses related to New Order political policies in Tafsir al-Huda and how the New Order’s political narrative influences the content of these interpretations. This study is a qualitative study using a literature review approach that focuses on the analysis of exegetical texts. The primary data sources for this study are Tafsir al-Huda: Tafsir Qur’an Basa Jawi by Bakri Syahid, the writing of the exegesis, and the socio-political dynamics during Indonesia’s New Order era. Data collection was conducted through the identification and selection of verses related to New Order policies and political narratives, based on prior research as well as keyword searches within the exegetical text, resulting in the identification of approximately 38 relevant verses for analysis. The data was then analyzed descriptively and analytically by examining the interpretation of verses related to specific themes within the political context of the New Order. Through this analysis, this study aims to examine how the socio-political context of the New Order influenced the interpretation of Qur’anic verses in Tafsir al-Huda. The results of the study indicate that the interpretation of Qur’anic verses in Bakri Syahid’s Tafsir al-Huda is strongly linked to the socio-political context of Indonesia’s New Order era. Through thematic mapping of the 38 analyzed verses, these interpretations reveal tendencies aligned with several New Order policy agendas, such as the role of religion in development, concepts of leadership, national development governance, security stability through the role of intelligence, and women’s participation in national development. Furthermore, this study also indicates that Bakri Syahid’s exegesis is influenced by his social background and ideological stance, which are closely aligned with the military and state bureaucratic spheres. These conditions shaped a pre-understanding that influenced how he read and interpreted the verses of the Qur’an, so that in some parts of the interpretation, the meaning of the verses appears linked to the values prevalent at that time, and even tends to support the narrative and political policies of the New Order. However, Bakri Syahid’s interpretation is not entirely supportive of state power, as in some interpretations, he also offers ethical criticism of leaders who live in luxury and remain distant from the people.
