The study is motivated by the growing economic activity in this religious tourism area, which is not only understood as a place of worship and pilgrimage but has also become an economic space through various services, commerce, and spiritual narratives that have developed within the community. This study aims to identify the forms of the commodification of pilgrimage rituals as well as the parties involved in the commodification process in the area. This study employs a qualitative method with a sociological approach to religion. Data collection techniques include participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Research informants included village elders, pilgrimage guides, merchants, pilgrims, village officials, and the local community. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study utilized Pattana Kitiarsa’s theory of religious commodification as well as Jean Baudrillard’s theories of simulacra and hyperreality as analytical frameworks. Research findings indicate that the pilgrimage practices at Safarwadi Cave have undergone commodification through the trade in pilgrimage supplies, guide services, lodging, motorcycle taxis, parking, donation boxes, and the sale of “kahuripan” water. The narrative of Sheikh Abdul Muhyi’s karamah and religious symbols serve as the primary attractions shaping economic activity in the area. Additionally, social media reinforces this hyperreality through the spread of viral content about Safarwadi Cave. Nevertheless, most pilgrims continue to view the pilgrimage as a form of tawasul, seeking blessings, and an effort to draw closer to Allah. date: 2026-06-05 date_type: published pages: 156 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM thesis_type: skripsi thesis_name: other citation: Hamdan Yuafi, NIM.: 22105040073 (2026) KOMODIFIKASI RITUAL ZIARAH GUA SAFARWADI DESA PAMIJAHAN KABUPATEN TASIKMALAYA.
