The researcher chose the novel Al-Syaḥāż by Naguib Mahfouz because it contains many conflicts that could impact the mental health of the main character. The reason the researcher uses literary psychology is that the issues presented in the novel Al-Syaḥāż largely discuss psychological problems. Maslow's theory pays great attention to the human dimension in relating to the environment in a humane manner, emphasizing the individual's freedom to express opinions and make choices, values, and responsibilities. Maslow believes that a person will experience profound happiness when they reach the stage of self-actualization. Maslow developed a theory in his humanistic approach called the hierarchy of needs, which is a theory of human needs arranged in a hierarchical order. In this research, the researcher also uses Daniel Goleman's theory, namely the theory of emotional intelligence, as a supporting theory. With that theory, it aids in the process of analyzing by the hierarchy of needs of the main character in the novel Al-Syāḥāż by Naguib Mahfouz. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data sources from the novel Al-Syāḥāż and several relevant similar studies. The research results show the prominent personality of the main character named Omar Hamzawi, characterized by strong desires, self-confidence, and consistency. The tiered needs of the main character Omar Hamzawi in the novel Al-Syāḥāż by Naguib Mahfouz have been well met, except for safety needs and love needs. The three hierarchical needs that have been well met, including physiological needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs, have been conveyed through the main character Omar Hamzawi. Additionally, there are emotional intelligence abilities of the main character Omar Hamzawi, including the ability to recognize one's own emotions, the ability to manage emotions, the ability to motivate oneself, and the ability to recognize the emotions of others. By integrating these two approaches, this research concludes that good emotional management is an important factor in the self-actualization process of the main character, enabling them to reach their maximum potential as individuals.
