However, in recent years, there has been a decline in children’s physical activity due to the increasing dominance of digital device usage, which leads children to engage more in sedentary behaviors. This condition may hinder optimal stimulation of early childhood gross motor development. On the other hand, traditional games have great potential to support gross motor development, yet their use in early childhood education remains limited and has not been extensively examined through historical literature sources.
This study aims to identify the types of traditional games in Meisjesspelen by J. L. Moens and to analyze their relevance to early childhood gross motor development based on David L. Gallahue’s motor development theory. This research employs a literature study approach using qualitative content analysis of 85 games contained in the book. The data were analyzed through a classification process of movement types, including locomotor, nonlocomotor, and manipulative skills, and further examined through an indepth analysis of three representative games: gobak sodor, gamparan angkling, and kus-kusan.
The findings reveal that the games in Meisjesspelen consist of various movement patterns, including locomotor, nonlocomotor, manipulative, balance, as well as social and verbal activities. The three analyzed games demonstrate strong relevance to early childhood gross motor indicators, such as agility, body coordination, balance, and movement control. In addition, these traditional games also contain educational values and support children’s social interaction. Therefore, traditional games in Meisjesspelen by J. L. Moens are relevant as a reference for developing early childhood learning activities that stimulate gross motor skills. The implication of this study is expected to serve as a reference for early childhood educators in integrating traditional games into learning activities, as well as supporting the preservation of local cultural heritage in the digital era.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">371.33 Media Pembelajaran</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-06-03</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS ILMU TARBIYAH DAN KEGURUAN</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_77661"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_77661_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
