N2  - This study was motivated by the continued existence of the Merariq
tradition among the Sasak community in Petemon, East Pagutan, Mataram, despite
the ongoing challenges of modernization and social change. The tradition is not
only preserved as a form of cultural identity but is also regarded as embodying
Islamic educational values that have been transmitted across generations. This study
aims to analyze the factors contributing to the sustainability of the Merariq
tradition, identify the Islamic educational values embedded within it, and describe
how these values are actualized in the daily lives of the community.
This study employed a qualitative approach using a field research design.
Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with traditional
leaders, religious leaders, local government officials, and community members, as
well as documentation. The data were analyzed through the processes of data
reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while the validity of the findings
was ensured through source and technique triangulation.
The findings reveal that the sustainability of the Merariq tradition is
influenced by the strong transmission of cultural heritage, the active roles of
traditional and religious leaders, the cultural identity of the Sasak community, and
the tradition's ability to adapt to Islamic values and contemporary social
developments. The Islamic educational values identified in this study include
family values, religiosity, responsibility, identity and diversity, self-reflection,
education, and social solidarity. These values are actualized throughout every stage
of the Merariq tradition through deliberation (musyawarah), strengthening family
ties (silaturahmi), the solemnization of marriage in accordance with Islamic law,
expressions of gratitude, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and social
responsibility. Therefore, the Merariq tradition functions not only as a cultural
heritage but also as an effective medium for the internalization and transmission of
Islamic educational values within the Sasak community.
