<dc:description>The emotional absence of fathers within the family, commonly referred to as the
invisible father phenomenon, has a measurable impact on children's psychological
development, particularly on the formation of self-concept during early childhood. This
phenomenon was observed among families in Teja Timur Village, Pamekasan Regency, where
fathers are physically present yet emotionally unavailable in their children's daily lives due to
occupational pressures, the construction of Madurese masculine identity, and inherited
intergenerational parenting patterns. This study aims to describe the forms of the invisible
father phenomenon within Madurese families in Teja Timur Village, to identify the contributing
factors behind the phenomenon, and to analyze its impact across the five dimensions of
children's self-concept formation.
This study adopts a qualitative approach using a phenomenological research design.
Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with four fathers and four mothers from
families with young children in Teja Timur Village, supplemented by non-participant
observation of family interactions. Data validity was established through source triangulation
and technique triangulation. Analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model,
drawing on Bowlby's Attachment Theory and Cooley's Looking-Glass Self Theory as the
primary analytical frameworks.
The findings reveal three key conclusions. First, the invisible father phenomenon in
Teja Timur Village manifests in various forms, including minimal quality communication
between fathers and children, fathers' absence from daily caregiving routines, a lack of
emotional affirmation, and fathers' non-involvement in significant moments of children's
growth and development. Second, the phenomenon stems from six mutually reinforcing factors:
occupational demands, work schedules misaligned with children's daily routines, patriarchal
Madurese cultural values, intergenerational parenting inheritance, fathers' discomfort with
emotional expression, and an unequal gender role construction. Third, the impact of the
invisible father phenomenon on children's self-concept is evident across all five dimensions —
physical, psychological, social, emotional, and academic — with severity directly proportional
to the degree of paternal emotional absence. This study affirms that the quality of a father's
emotional presence is more consequential to children's self-concept development than the
quantity of his physical presence alone.</dc:description>
