However, modernization, changing economic orientations, and declining understanding of customary values may affect the sustainability of ancestral property management and the position of Bundo Kanduang as the guardian of clan property. This study aims to analyze the role and authority of Bundo Kanduang in managing harta pusaka tinggi in Nagari Palangki, Sijunjung Regency, using Naila Kabeer's Women's Agency perspective. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive field research design. A sociological approach was used to understand how social interactions, community structures, and prevailing social values influence and are influenced by the observed phenomenon. Data were collected through observations, interviews with Bundo Kanduang and customary leaders, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Bundo Kanduang is not merely a customary symbol but also an active actor with significant roles and authority in managing harta pusaka tinggi. These roles are reflected in her position as a communal rights holder, amban puruak pagangan kunci (custodian of ancestral property), provider of considerations and approval in clan deliberations, protector of ancestral property from transfers that violate customary principles, and provider of approval in the mortgaging process of ancestral property. The authority of Bundo Kanduang is exercised through her ability to supervise, influence decisions, and ensure that ancestral property management remains oriented toward collective interests and clan welfare.
