Zaki Septa ArdanaauthorThis study examines the meaning of the sacredness of Bukit Turgo from the perspective of pilgrims. The research is based on the assumption that Bukit Turgo, as a religious site, is regarded as sacred by both the local community and pilgrims and is used as a place to perform ritual practices, gain spiritual experiences, and carry out special forms of reverence toward the tomb. This study specifically explores the meaning of the sacredness of Bukit Turgo, particularly the tomb of Syekh Jumadil Kubro, in the social and spiritual lives of pilgrims, as well as how the sacredness of Bukit Turgo is constructed by the pilgrims themselves. This research employs a religious anthropology approach using the theory of the sacred and the profane proposed by Mircea Eliade. A qualitative research method was applied, and data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants consisted of pilgrims, tomb caretakers, and members of the local community surrounding Bukit Turgo. The collected data were analyzed descriptively to understand the construction of sacredness and its meaning from the perspective of the pilgrims. The findings reveal that pilgrims perceive every action performed during their pilgrimage to Bukit Turgo as a means of drawing closer to the sacred. This perception is rooted in the belief in the karomah associated with the tomb of Syekh Jumadil Kubro. The sacredness of Bukit Turgo is constructed through various ritual practices and traditions, such as tahlil, wirid, tirakat, burning incense, and flower scattering, as well as through pilgrims’ behavior, including maintaining proper etiquette, performing ablution before entering the tomb area, removing footwear, and walking on their knees when approaching the tomb. The sacredness of Bukit Turgo is further strengthened by symbols and myths, particularly the belief in the karomah of Syekh Jumadil Kubro and the spiritual experiences felt by pilgrims. From the perspective of Mircea Eliade’s theory, the sacredness of Bukit Turgo is reflected through the elements of Sacred Space, Sacred Time, symbols, rituals, and religious experiences that distinguish the sacred realm from the profane realm. This study concludes that the sacredness of Bukit Turgo does not emerge naturally but is socially constructed through meanings attached to religious experiences, rituals, symbols, myths, and ethical conduct maintained by pilgrims.
