Hj. Ermi Suhasti Syafe’i, M. Si. abstract: Bhoka is part of the customary marriage practice of the Muna ethnic community and was initially understood as mahar (marriage dowry). However, over time, there has been a shift in the understanding of the position of bhoka, which is no longer understood as mahar. This is related to the practice of bhoka, in which it is distributed to certain parties in accordance with customary provisions, which is considered inconsistent with the concept of mahar in Islamic law. As a result, bhoka is understood as a customary obligation, while mahar is an obligation under Islamic law. This study aims to explain the practice of bhoka and analyze the shift in the understanding of bhoka from the perspective of the sociology of Islamic law, including the social factors influencing it. This study is field research employing a descriptive-analytical design. The data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The study adopts the Sociology of Islamic Law approach using the theory of M. Atho Mudzhar. Data were analyzed qualitatively using an inductive approach through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that a shift has occurred in the understanding of bhoka, from being initially understood as mahar to being regarded as a customary obligation with a status distinct from mahar under Islamic law. This shift is influenced by the development of the community’s understanding of the concept of mahar in Islamic law, as well as the roles of religious leaders, customary leaders, and marriage registrars in providing understanding and adapting customary practices to the provisions of Islamic law. From the perspective of the sociology of Islamic law, particularly M. Atho Mudzhar’s theory, this condition demonstrates the influence of social change and development on the community’s legal thought, as well as the role of social movements or community organizations in supporting the development of Islamic law. Despite the shift in the community’s understanding, bhoka continues to be maintained as a customary tradition with social and cultural functions and does not conflict with the principles of Islamic law; therefore, it can be understood as a form of ‘urf sahih. date: 2026-07-29 date_type: published pages: 117 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS SYARI’AH DAN HUKUM thesis_type: skripsi thesis_name: other citation: Sitti Luthfiyah Sholihah, NIM.: 22103050014 (2026) PERGESERAN PEMAHAMAN DALAM TRADISI BHOKA PADA PERKAWINAN ADAT SUKU MUNA (STUDI DI KABUPATEN MUNA PROVINSI SULAWESI TENGGARA).
