In its implementation, foster caregivers (wali asuh) play an important role in assisting, guiding, and empowering students throughout their boarding school life. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the role of foster caregivers in empowering students at Sekolah Rakyat Senior High School (SRMA) 19 Bantul, identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in carrying out this role, and examine the differences in mentoring approaches between foster caregivers with Social Work and non-Social Work educational backgrounds. This study employed a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. The informants were selected using purposive sampling and consisted of the foster caregiver coordinator, foster caregivers, dormitory supervisors, teachers, and students. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana interactive model, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation. The findings indicate that foster caregivers serve as mentors, guides, motivators, facilitators, mediators, and parental figures for students in the boarding school environment. Their assistance covers academic, social, emotional, spiritual, and independent living aspects. The study also found differences in mentoring approaches between foster caregivers with Social Work and non-Social Work educational backgrounds. Foster caregivers with a Social Work background tend to apply social work principles such as assessment, empathetic communication, and empowerment, while those without a Social Work background rely more on their educational experience and character-building approaches. Supporting factors include caregivers' competencies, collaboration among school personnel, and institutional support. Meanwhile, the main challenges include students' diverse backgrounds, the high intensity of mentoring, communication barriers with parents, and the emotional fatigue experienced by foster caregivers.
