The purpose of this study is to understand how prisoners heads of households interpret the role changes they face while serving their sentences in prison. This study employs a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach. The research subjects were selected using purposive sampling, with the criteria for informants being inmates convicted of negligent driving who also serve as heads of households. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that the status of being a head of household plays a crucial role in family dynamics, particularly in meeting needs, making decisions, and protecting family members. Changes and shifts in roles during the period of imprisonment do not eliminate the subject’s role as head of the household. The physical distance separating the subject from their family does not sever the bonds between family members, interactions and relationships among family members remain intact through the use of prison facilities.
