non-Muslim students within the academic environment of Universitas Islam Negeri
Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. As an Islamic higher education institution that
promotes religious moderation and inclusivity, the university provides an
intercultural environment where students from diverse religious backgrounds
interact in both academic and social contexts. Intercultural communication
adaptation is developed between non-Muslim and Muslim students in everyday
campus interactions. This study employs Interaction Adaptation Theory (IAT),
focusing on the dimensions of requirements, expectations, and desires. Using a
qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews
with five non-Muslim students from different religious and cultural backgrounds,
supported by triangulation techniques to ensure data credibility. The results show
that intercultural communication adaptation functions as a strategy to reduce
cultural barriers and strengthen mutual understanding within the academic
environment. Both non-Muslim and Muslim students demonstrate accommodative,
respectful, and tolerant communication patterns in building harmonious
relationships. Non-Muslim students adapt to the university’s dominant cultural
environment, while Muslim students also display openness and flexibility toward
religious and cultural differences. These reciprocal adaptation practices contribute
to the development of an inclusive and supportive academic atmosphere.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">302.2 Communication/Komunikasi</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-05-20</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS ILMU SOSIAL DAN HUMANIORA</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mods:mods>
