abstract: Body dissatisfaction is a widespread phenomenon, particularly among female
adolescents. Research addressing body dissatisfaction continues to be conducted and
developed. Across many aspects, the use of visual-based social media such as Instagram,
reinforced by social comparison, represents some of the factors showing a major influence. The
use of Instagram provides unrealistic depictions of body shape, which subsequently prompts
female adolescents, as viewers, to engage in social comparison between their own bodies and
the images they see on Instagram. This study was conducted to determine how social
comparison mediates the relationship between the intensity of Instagram use and body
dissatisfaction in female adolescents. A quantitative approach using multiple linear regression
analysis was employed, with data collected online through questionnaires from female
adolescent respondents across Indonesia. The instruments used were the intensity of Instagram
use scale, alongside adapted versions of the body dissatisfaction scale and the social
comparison scale. Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression testing. The
results of the study indicate that social comparison partially mediates the relationship between
the intensity of Instagram use and body dissatisfaction.
