"This study draws on the researcher’s experience as a Muslim\r\nwoman who has worn the niqab from 2015 to 2026, amid social\r\ndiscourses that often associate the niqab with conservatism,\r\nexclusivism, and radicalism. It aims to analyze the transformation of\r\nthe meaning of the niqab and the formation of agency through\r\nreligious experiences and interactions with family, community, and\r\nacademic environments. The study employs an autoethnographic\r\napproach, using personal experience as the starting point of analysis.\r\nData were collected through self-reflection, dialogues with people\r\nwho have been part of the researcher’s journey, and engagement\r\nwith public discourse and academic literature. Reflexivity and\r\ntriangulation were employed to broaden perspectives and maintain\r\ncritical distance from personal experience.\r\nThe findings show that the decision to wear the niqab did\r\nnot initially arise from radical ideology, but from an experience of\r\nsexual harassment that prompted a search for safety and bodily\r\ncontrol. In the subsequent course of her religious journey, this\r\nprocess developed into self-radicalisation, characterized by\r\nincreasingly rigid religious understandings and bodily discipline.\r\nVarious experiences then created ruptures that prompted selfderadicalisation,\r\nnot as a rejection of the niqab or religious identity,\r\nbut as a transformation in how the researcher understood norms,\r\nbeliefs, the body, and religious practice.\r\nThis process unfolded reflexively and relationally through\r\nencounters with diverse experiences, forms of knowledge, and\r\nspaces for dialogue. Within this process, agency is understood as the capacity to reflect on, negotiate, and reconstruct the meanings of the\r\nnorms one inhabits. The study demonstrates that the primary\r\ntransformation did not lie in the religious symbol itself, which the\r\nresearcher continues to wear, but in how its meaning was\r\nunderstood. The niqab, initially understood as a means of selfprotection\r\nand a practice of pious discipline, came to be understood\r\nas a consciously chosen expression of religious commitment and\r\npart of an ongoing spiritual, intellectual, and human journey. This\r\ntransformation also shifted the researcher’s understanding of\r\nwomen’s bodies, particularly the recognition that the niqab cannot\r\nguarantee safety or serve as a measure of piety. These findings affirm\r\nthat the niqab cannot be understood solely as a marker of radicalism.\r\nWomen who wear the niqab should instead be understood as subjects\r\nof knowledge who possess the agency to shape and interpret the\r\nmeaning of their own religious experiences."^^ .
