Interpersonal communication between students and their academic advisors plays a vital role in overcoming these obstacles. This qualitative descriptive study analyzes thesis mentoring relationships among 2021 Communication Studies students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Grounded in Joseph A. DeVito’s interpersonal communication theory, the research focuses on five key aspects: openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. Data was gathered from students and advisors via purposive sampling using in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed through the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana interactive model with source triangulation. The findings demonstrate that effective interpersonal communication substantially helps students overcome thesis hurdles. Openness enables transparent discussions about research progress and difficulties. Empathy allows advisors to understand students' academic and psychological states. Supportiveness manifests as direct guidance, motivation, and practical solutions. Positiveness fosters mutual respect, while equality builds a comfortable environment that boosts student confidence when sharing opinions and challenges. Ultimately, these five interrelated aspects create a supportive mentoring dynamic that facilitates smooth thesis completion. %Z Dr. Mokhamad Mahfud, S,Sos.I., M.Si.
