Entman, ABC, Demonstrasi Pro-Palestina note: Durrotul Mas’udah, M.A. abstract: This study examines how the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) framed its coverage of pro-Palestinian student demonstrations at Australian universities in 2024. The protests took the form of campus encampments demanding that universities cut ties with companies linked to Israel. The research question asks how ABC framed these demonstrations. The study uses Robert M. Entman's framing analysis. It applies a qualitative method, analysing thirteen ABC News articles through Entman's four devices: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgement, and treatment recommendation. The findings show that ABC framed the demonstrations mainly as a matter of campus safety and order rather than as part of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Although peaceful-solidarity voices appeared frequently, they mostly served as balancing quotes within moral judgement, while the safety-and-order frame controlled how the problem and its solution were defined. Student voices were also kept at a distance through words such as "claimed". In contrast, statements from university officials and police were reported directly, without such distancing markers, indicating an unequal treatment of sources despite ABC's obligation of impartiality as a public broadcaster. This pattern points to what has been described as false balance, in which the suffering in Gaza, the root cause of the protests, was placed on equal or even lesser footing than concerns over campus order. ABC therefore did not merely report the events but also helped shape how the public understood them, framing the demonstrations primarily as a disciplinary issue rather than as a humanitarian one. date: 2026-08-14 date_type: published pages: 170 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS ILMU SOSIAL DAN HUMANIORA thesis_type: skripsi thesis_name: other citation: Bunga Rufaida Adya, NIM.: 22107030022 (2026) ANALISIS FRAMING PEMBERITAAN AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION (ABC) PADA DEMONSTRASI MAHASISWA PRO PALESTINA DI AUSTRALIA TAHUN 2024.
