This phenomenon of syncretism has become a distinctive characteristic of the development of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago, which can also be seen in the pilgrimage tradition to the grave of Mbah Boyopatih in Lamongan Regency. The existence of this grave has its own attraction because Mbah Boyopatih is considered a wali Allah (saint of God) and a disciple of Sunan Giri who was assigned to spread Islam in the Lamongan area. This grave is also associated with the prohibition against eating fish for his descendants and the residents of Medang Village. Beside the entrance to the grave, there is also a pond believed to be the place where Mbah Boyopatih was saved by a catfish. This pond is believed to cure illnesses, especially skin diseases caused by violating existing taboos. The tradition of pilgrimage to the grave of Mbah Boyopatih has been carried out since ancient times and has been preserved until today through oral tradition. This research focuses more on the forms of syncretism between culture and religion in the pilgrimage practices at the grave of Mbah Boyopatih and the meanings contained in the pilgrimage rituals at the site. Through Clifford Geertz’s symbolic interpretive theory, the author attempts to explain the syncretism occurring in the pilgrimage tradition to the grave of Mbah Boyopatih. The method used is descriptive qualitative, aiming to describe and explain the phenomena occurring in depth and comprehensively. Informants were determined using purposive sampling techniques, namely: the wife of the late caretaker of Mbah Boyopatih’s grave, the secretary of Medang Village, the grave keeper, village elders of Medang, pilgrims, and residents of Medang Village. This study concludes that syncretism in the pilgrimage tradition to the grave of Mbah Boyopatih can be seen in various aspects, namely: aspects of belief and historical narratives developing within the community, the use of ritual paraphernalia, the selection of ritual times, and the motivations or intentions of the pilgrims. In addition, it was also found that the pilgrimage rituals at the grave of Mbah Boyopatih contain various meanings, including Islamic recitations as symbols of drawing closer to Allah, ritual paraphernalia as symbols of respect for ancestors, tumpeng as a symbol of the direction and purpose of human life, and the prohibition against eating catfish as a symbol of respect for the message of Mbah Boyopatih.297.322 Ziarah Kubur2026-06-11UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAMThesis
