Arranged marriage remains a living tradition within the pesantren environment and constitutes an integral part of its social and cultural system. The study aims to describe how the matchmaking process is carried out and to understand the relationship between the socio-cultural structure of the pesantren and individual agency within the practice. This research employs a qualitative field research approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving students and alumni who experienced arranged marriages. The data were analyzed descriptively using Anthony Giddens’ Structuration Theory. The findings reveal that the practice of arranged marriage at Darut Tauhid Islamic Boarding School takes several forms, including matchmaking initiated by the kyai upon the request of parents, matchmaking proposed by students themselves with the consideration and approval of the kyai, and matchmaking facilitated through family and pesantren social networks. In this process, the kyai occupies a central position as a trusted figure who possesses religious authority, experience, and moral legitimacy in recommending suitable marriage partners. Nevertheless, students retain the right to accept or reject the proposed match. From an anthropological perspective, arranged marriage is not merely a mechanism for selecting a life partner but also a socio-cultural practice reflecting religious values, pesantren traditions, respect for teachers (ta’dzim), and the social relationships embedded within the pesantren community. Through the lens of Structuration Theory, the tradition is maintained through the continuous reproduction of social structures consisting of norms, values, and the authority of the kyai. Meanwhile, the concept of agency demonstrates that students remain active actors who interpret, negotiate, and make decisions regarding the matchmaking process.
