N2  - This study aims to examine the process of internalizing tolerance values through Islamic Religious Education in shaping students? moderate attitudes within a multicultural school environment, particularly at SMA Negeri 8 Yogyakarta. The study is based on the growing issues of intolerance and radicalism among young people, which are influenced by social changes and the rapid development of digital media. In this context, Islamic Religious Education plays an important role in instilling values of tolerance and moderation as part of students? character formation.
This research adopts a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving Islamic Religious Education teachers, students, and school stakeholders. Data analysis follows the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through triangulation techniques.
The results of the study indicate that the internalization of tolerance values occurs through three stages: value transformation, value transaction, and value transinternalization. Islamic Religious Education teachers play a key role in this process as initiators, role models, and driving forces through interactive learning and school activities that support tolerance values. These values are not only understood theoretically but also reflected in students' attitudes, such as respecting differences, not being discriminatory, and being able to collaborate with students from diverse backgrounds. The success of internalization is seen in the achievement of mutual respect, increased tolerance, and the formation of moderate attitudes. This is supported by religious subjects, Ministry of Religious Affairs counseling, culture and the environment, and teacher-student interactions. However, external influences, especially social media, remain a challenge in maintaining students' moderate attitudes.
