abstract: This research discusses tafsīr tadabburī, written by Majd Makki, as a form of a religious intervention over a critical social-politics situation in Suriah revolution context. While traditional sunni tafseer tradition emphasizes scriptural-orthodox aspect, and contemporary tradition exposes the spirit of Islamic politics, the tafsīr tadabburī as developed by Majd Makkī displays a practical character. He managed to make tafseer of Al-Qur’an a social-politics criticism implicitly. This study focuses on four fundamental questions. 1) What relation is there between the development of sunni politics authority and the establishment of a tafseer discourse that enables tafseer to be a social-politics intervention instrument? 2) How is tafsīr tadabburī constructed methodologically and epistemologically as a practical religious discourse? 3) Why and how did Majd Makkī take tafsīr tadabburī a strategic political intervention in Suriah revolution? And 4) In what way did tafsīr tadabburī play a role as a counter discourse and instrument of counter-hegemony over a dominant political narration of Assad regime? This qualitative study applies critical discourse approach which integrates the theory of discourse and power by Michel Foucault and the theory of organic hegemony and intellectual by Antonio Gramsci. Collected from an examination of Majd Makkī interpretation in both books and digital platforms, the data are analyzed under Suriah social-politics dynamics context before and after revolution of 2011. The results show that tafsīr tadabburī of Majd Makkī is a practical tafseer which acts as a rival discourse over Assad regime hegemony. The tafseer articulates civilians’ affliction, encourages ethical political participation, and brings values of justice, unity, and anti-sectarianism for a moderate Islamism. He also avoids rhetorical harshness, uses implied language and Qur’anic symbols. Majd frames tafseer a contemplative-critical instrument which is relevant to the reality. This research contributes to the development of tafseer theory and the confirmation of the possibility of tafseer’s function expantion from a normative-theoretical room to a practical-critical field. It also opens a new room of concepts for a study on the relation between religious texts, political discourse and social struggle.
