      "abstract": "Religious moderation is a crucial effort in fostering harmonious religious\r\nlife within a diverse society. Pesantren hold a strategic position in strengthening\r\nreligious moderation because their culture is shaped not only by religious\r\ninstruction but also by traditions, habitual practices, role modeling, communal\r\nliving, and social interaction. This study aims to: (1) describe the cultural\r\ncharacteristics of the Sunan Pandanaran Islamic Boarding School in Yogyakarta\r\nin supporting the strengthening of religious moderation, (2) analyze the\r\nmanagement process of the pesantren culture regarding the strengthening of\r\nreligious moderation; and (3) analyze religious moderation practices based on the\r\nbehind the wall, at the wall, and beyond the wall theories.\r\nThis study employs a qualitative approach using an ethnographic research\r\ndesign. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews,\r\nand documentation. Data analysis utilized James P. Spradley’s ethnographic\r\nmodel, incorporating domain, taxonomic, and componential analyses, as well as\r\nthe analysis of cultural themes. Data validity was assessed based on the criteria of\r\ncredibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability.\r\nThe research findings indicate that: (1) the cultural characteristics of\r\npesantren serve as a foundation for strengthening religious moderation through\r\nscholarly traditions, kitab kuning study sessions, formal education, the communal\r\nlife of santri, and openness to external parties. (2) The management of pesantren\r\nculture to strengthen religious moderation is implemented through the Planning,\r\nOrganizing, Actuating, and Controlling (POAC) functions, however, the planning,\r\norganizing, and controlling aspects still require strengthening, particularly\r\nregarding the formulation of guidelines, role allocation, and evaluation indicators.\r\n(3) Practices categorized as behind the wall and at the wall have been achieved.\r\nMeanwhile, beyond the wall practices are beginning to emerge within the intrareligious\r\nrealm through involvement in the Peacesantren program which actualizes\r\nreligious moderation values in social life whereas in the inter-religious realm, such\r\npractices have not yet manifested as collaboration in addressing shared social\r\nissues.",
