N2  - Religious moderation is a crucial effort in fostering harmonious religious
life within a diverse society. Pesantren hold a strategic position in strengthening
religious moderation because their culture is shaped not only by religious
instruction but also by traditions, habitual practices, role modeling, communal
living, and social interaction. This study aims to: (1) describe the cultural
characteristics of the Sunan Pandanaran Islamic Boarding School in Yogyakarta
in supporting the strengthening of religious moderation, (2) analyze the
management process of the pesantren culture regarding the strengthening of
religious moderation; and (3) analyze religious moderation practices based on the
behind the wall, at the wall, and beyond the wall theories.
This study employs a qualitative approach using an ethnographic research
design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews,
and documentation. Data analysis utilized James P. Spradley?s ethnographic
model, incorporating domain, taxonomic, and componential analyses, as well as
the analysis of cultural themes. Data validity was assessed based on the criteria of
credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability.
The research findings indicate that: (1) the cultural characteristics of
pesantren serve as a foundation for strengthening religious moderation through
scholarly traditions, kitab kuning study sessions, formal education, the communal
life of santri, and openness to external parties. (2) The management of pesantren
culture to strengthen religious moderation is implemented through the Planning,
Organizing, Actuating, and Controlling (POAC) functions, however, the planning,
organizing, and controlling aspects still require strengthening, particularly
regarding the formulation of guidelines, role allocation, and evaluation indicators.
(3) Practices categorized as behind the wall and at the wall have been achieved.
Meanwhile, beyond the wall practices are beginning to emerge within the intrareligious
realm through involvement in the Peacesantren program which actualizes
religious moderation values in social life whereas in the inter-religious realm, such
practices have not yet manifested as collaboration in addressing shared social
issues.
