In Java, the kiai (Islamic religious scholar and community leader) is regarded as a central figure who functions as a social mediator and a problem solver for the Muslim community. One of the prominent figures in the development of Islam in Java was Kiai Sholeh Darat. In the late nineteenth century, he propagated Islamic teachings in the coastal regions of Java amid the influence of Hindu-Buddhist traditions and the dominance of Dutch colonial rule. In conveying Islamic teachings, Kiai Sholeh Darat carried out vernacularization through the use of the Javanese language written in the Arab Pegon script as a medium for the transmission of Islamic knowledge. This study examines the vernacularization of Islamic teachings into Javanese language and culture and its implications for Kiai Sholeh Darat’s Sufi thought (tasawuf) in the late nineteenth century. Previous studies on Kiai Sholeh Darat’s thought have primarily focused on his da‘wah activities and the translation of classical Islamic texts, while the dimension of vernacularizing Islamic teachings into Javanese language and culture within his Sufi thought has not been extensively explored. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the patterns of vernacularization of Islamic teachings into the Javanese language in Kiai Sholeh Darat’s works and their implications for the construction of his Sufi thought. This research is a study of intellectual history employing a qualitative approach. As its analytical foundation, it uses Sheldon Pollock’s theory of vernacularization, which emphasizes the process of shifting from a cosmopolitan language to a local language as a medium for the production of knowledge. In this study, Arabic, as the principal language of the Islamic literary tradition, is positioned as the cosmopolitan language, while Javanese written in the Pegon script is positioned as the vernacular language used to disseminate Islamic teachings to Javanese society. The study employs the historical method, which includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The collected sources are analyzed using a content analysis approach to identify and interpret the research data. The findings reveal three principal conclusions. First, Kiai Sholeh Darat vernacularized Islamic teachings from Arabic into coastal Javanese written in the Arab Pegon script as a strategy to convey Islamic teachings, strengthen Islamic literacy, provide a medium for the transmission of Islamic knowledge, and expand the spread of Islam among Javanese society. Second, this pattern of vernacularization encompasses the strengthening of local identity and religious identity through the teachings of tawhid (Islamic monotheism), adab (Islamic manners and ethics), Islamic education based on Sufi values, and the reinterpretation of the traditions and customs of Javanese Muslim society. Third, the vernacularization of Islamic teachings into local Javanese culture has implications for Kiai Sholeh Darat’s Sufi thought.
