"Nizār Qabbānī’s poem “Taktubīn al-Syi’r.. wa Uwaqqi’ Anā..” offers\r\nreflections that invite a rethinking of the patriarchal cultural\r\nconstruction embedded in binary opposition, and specifically of the\r\ndiscourse of the masculine rib, which many understand as given in\r\nthe way religious doctrine is generally understood. The poem presents\r\nits thought in a deconstructive style, toward the reconstruction of a\r\nmore humanist cultural formation capable of restoring women’s\r\nautonomy as human beings.\r\nTwo principal findings emerge. First, the oppressive discourse of\r\nthe rib within binary opposition is a falsehood concealing a patriarchal\r\nideology that oppresses women to enforce male domination. That\r\nideology has shaped a reality in which women have been left behind\r\nand have experienced radical human degradation across millennia.\r\nSecond, the radical deconstruction the poem performs operates\r\nthrough the reversal of the binary opposition of the rib myth as a\r\nstrategy for strengthening women’s humanity. The discovery of\r\nancient matriarchal traces functions as a trace producing différance,\r\nthereby deferring and destabilising fixed meaning. The instability of meaning within the opposition between masculine subjectivity and\r\nfeminine objectivity renders the rib myth a constructed rather than a\r\ngiven truth. That unstable opposition is ultimately dismantled to\r\nestablish a new egalitarian relation and to eliminate the centre within\r\nbinary structures.\r\nThe wider significance of the reading lies in its final refusal. It\r\nwould have been simpler for the poem to answer millennia of\r\nsubordination with an assertion of feminine supremacy, and the\r\nhistorical material it invokes would have supported such an assertion.\r\nThat it declines to do so, insisting instead that women exist as\r\nthemselves and that no pole should occupy the centre, is what\r\ndistinguishes deconstruction from inversion.
