"The tradition of Tompangan in Sumenep has long been\r\nunderstood as a practice of cooperation and social solidarity.\r\nHowever, in contemporary developments, this tradition has given\r\nrise to tensions between religious norms, traditional practices, and\r\nsocial realities. The return of donations exceeding the initial\r\nnominal value creates a halal-haram ambivalence that is not\r\nadequately explained through normative fiqh. On the other hand,\r\nTompangan operates within a social structure that contains\r\nrelations of power, prestige, and symbolic sanctions, so that\r\ncommunity participation is driven by shame, the obligation to\r\nmaintain dignity, and collective pressure. In this context,\r\nTompangan reflects doxa that reproduces symbolic power.\r\nDeparting from these issues, this study answers three main\r\nquestions: (1) how do transactional economy and power relations\r\noperate between actors in the practice of the Tompangan tradition\r\nin Sumenep, Madura? (2) Why does the practice of the Tompangan\r\ntradition persist in Sumenep, Madura?, and (3) What is the\r\nperspective of the discursive tradition of sharia in the practice of\r\nTompangan transactions in Sumenep, Madura?\r\nThis research is a qualitative study using an Islamic legal\r\nanthropology approach to understand Tompangan as a socioreligious\r\npractice born from community innovation in responding\r\nto religious norms and adapting to local Madurese culture. The\r\nresearch analysis combines Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social\r\npractice and Talal Asad's concept of discursive tradition to examine\r\npower relations, sharia meaning, and negotiations between fiqh\r\nnorms, religious authority, and community social experiences.\r\nEmpirical data were obtained through in-depth interviews,\r\nparticipant observation, and field document studies, while\r\nnormative data were sourced from fiqh literature, religious fatwas,\r\nand relevant Islamic legal concepts. Data were analyzed\r\nthematically and contextually.\r\nThis study finds that Tompangan is a transactional\r\neconomic practice based on reciprocity, not merely a voluntary gift.\r\nFirst, recording, the expectation of return, and value addition\r\ntransform aid into a social obligation, while power relations among\r\nactors are shaped by the unequal distribution of economic, social,\r\ncultural, and symbolic capital. Second, the persistence of Tompangan is supported by reciprocity, internalized honor, social\r\nobedience, symbolic sanctions, and religious legitimacy. Third,\r\nfrom the perspective of the discursive tradition of sharia, the\r\nconstruction of the Tompangan contract depends on intention,\r\nrecording, expectation of return, nominal addition, and social\r\npressure. Tompangan can take the form of a grant or ṣadaqah,\r\napproach qardh when repayment is obligatory, and become qardh\r\nfāsid when the addition is binding and gives rise to mafsadah. The\r\ntheoretical contribution shows that community economic\r\nsustainability is supported by material reciprocity, symbolic\r\nobedience, and discursive legitimacy. This conceptual contribution\r\noffers a model of living Islamic law through the institutionalization\r\nof reciprocity, symbolic power, and discursive negotiations\r\nbetween texts, religious authorities, customs, and society, which\r\nform the binding power of law in a contextual, productive,\r\ncorrective, and sustainable manner."^^ .
