"Merariq is a wedding tradition performed by the people of Sasak\r\ntribe of Lombok on the basis of local belief system. The presence of\r\nIslam and the penetration of global modernity bring about changes in\r\nthe procession, norms, values, practices, symbols, and social meaning.\r\nThis research aims to know merariq tradition practice amid the stream\r\nof Islam and global modernity. The study also views the\r\ntransformation and reconstruction processes. This qualitative research\r\nexamines cases occurring in several locations in Lombok (Mataram,\r\nWest Lombok, Central Lombok, East Lombok, and North Lombok).\r\nCollected through observation, interviews, and documentation, the\r\ndata is analyzed under Miles and Huberman data analysis technic.\r\nWhile a theory of Rites of Passage of Arnold van Gennep is used to\r\nview the practice of merariq, liquid modernity theory by Zygmunt\r\nBauman is applied for a transformation and reconstruction analysis.\r\nThe study discovers that the merariq tradition is a series of\r\nwedding processions within Sasak Muslim society, carried out in three\r\nstages. First, a pre-liminal phase, which is midang procession, second,\r\nliminal phase, which comprises memulang/memalung, besebo, sejati,\r\nselabar, and ngawinan, third, post-liminal phase, which consists of\r\nbegawe, sorong serah aji kerame, nyongkolan, and bales lampak nae.\r\nThe values, meaning, and symbols existing in each phase are all Sasak\r\ncustom-based. The presence of Islam in local culture bears normative\r\nand spiritual values, and structurally adjusts component of custom\r\ncontroversy to suit Islamic sharia. At this point, Islam brings about a\r\ntradition of merariq ntan agame. In addition, global modernity comes\r\nthrough education and technology as transformation energy to make\r\nmerariq personal, independent, and legitimate decision. Education\r\nturns merariq into a tradition of merariq saq tapeq, and technology\r\ninto merariq saq molah one.\r\nThis research also reconstructs the merariq tradition practiced\r\nby Sasak Muslim society of Lombok into four parts (i.e. from custom\r\nto sharia, from traditional to rational, from ritual to festival, and from analog to digital). The reconstruction has made social structure and\r\ntradition meaning liquid. Therefore, merariq tradition within Sasak\r\nMuslim society nowadays is a collaboration of tradition, Islam, and\r\nglobal modernity into a single arena of ritual named merariq serebuk\r\nwithout eliminating its essence of values and meaning. It is, in fact,\r\nmerely about renewal, adjustment, and modification, making merariq\r\ntradition meet sharia and contemporary era. The dynamics shows that\r\nthe Sasak society of Lombok has created a new rich religious tradition,\r\nand makes the tradition survive and up-to-date."^^ . "2026-08-28" . . . .
