Most scholarship treats it as the setting where religious events unfold, paying little attention to how the platform itself shapes what happens inside. This thesis argues that the workings of social media are not only a scaffold for authority but also a source of challenge to the figures within it, shaped by the interplay of platform logic, affordances, and mediated visibility.
The study takes a qualitative, multiple case study approach on three established Indonesian preachers: Gus Miftah, Ustaz Adi Hidayat, and Gus Iqdam. Digital traces are read through van Dijck and Poell's social media logic, Bucher and Helmond's affordances, and Thompson's and Bucher's accounts of visibility. Each case shows a distinct challenge. Gus Miftah faced rapid escalation after the Magelang iced tea incident of November 2024, driving him into a 33-day silence and a shift from public display to strategic withdrawal. Ustaz Adi Hidayat's expertise was repeatedly contested over the years without a breaking point, turning contestation into the steady backdrop of his digital presence. Gus Iqdam's content circulated mainly through fanbase accounts beyond his control, even as his offline majelis in Blitar carried on undisturbed.
The synthesis yields three patterns: the persistence of digital archives, decentralised connectivity and mobilisation, and datafication that turns metrics into proxies. How each activates depends on the figure's authority, the event, and the platform configuration, so identical affordances play out differently. Building on the view that digital religious authority is a continually negotiated condition, this thesis pushes further by insisting that such a reading must engage both sides at once: the figure and the workings of the medium. The interplay between archive, distribution, and recognition is where the platform enters, and helps shape, that ongoing negotiation.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">302.23 Komunikasi Massa</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-08-05</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;PASCASARJANA</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_78652"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_78652_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
