(This study examines the concept of divinity in Islam and Christianity in light of Ibn Taymiyyah?s al-Jaw{\=a}b al-{\d S}a{\d h}{\=i}{\d h} li-man Baddala D{\=i}n al-Mas{\=i}{\d h}. The research problem arises from the fact that the difference between the Islamic and Christian conceptions of divinity is not limited to the formal contrast between taw{\d h}{\=i}d and the Trinity, nor to a numerical distinction between oneness and threeness. Rather, it concerns a deeper epistemological question: the source of knowledge about God, the limits of reason in understanding revelation, and the role of theological and historical interpretations in shaping religious conceptions of the divine. Accordingly, this study focuses on how Ibn Taymiyyah constructs the Islamic concept of divinity, how he critiques the Christian concept of divinity through the doctrines of the Trinity, incarnation, and the authority of the Gospel, and what methodological features of his critique may contribute to comparative theology and contemporary Muslim-Christian dialogue.
This study employs a descriptive-analytical method, supported by a comparative approach. It reads al-Jaw{\=a}b al-{\d S}a{\d h}{\=i}{\d h} as the primary source and situates its arguments within their historical and polemical context. The study also makes limited use of Fazlur Rahman?s double movement theory as an auxiliary analytical tool. This theory is not used as a framework to judge Ibn Taymiyyah?s theological position, nor as a substitute for his epistemological structure, but only to help read the text within its historical context, extract its general methodological values, and examine the limits of their relevance for contemporary contexts.
The study finds that Ibn Taymiyyah?s concept of divinity is grounded in the centrality of sound revelation and sound reason. His critique of the Trinity, incarnation, and the authority of the Gospel is not separate from the question of divinity, but forms part of his broader project to protect taw{\d h}{\=i}d from composition, multiplicity, incarnation, and epistemic instability. The study also shows that the value of al-Jaw{\=a}b al-{\d S}a{\d h}{\=i}{\d h} lies not merely in its polemical response to Christianity, but in its function as a theological and epistemological text that reveals Ibn Taymiyyah?s method of analyzing doctrinal sources, concepts, internal coherence, and historical formation. The study concludes that the contemporary use of Ibn Taymiyyah?s method should be methodological and critical rather than literal, by benefiting from his emphasis on conceptual clarity, return to primary sources, examination of internal coherence, and distinction between revelation and later theological interpretation, while recognizing the difference between medieval polemics and modern interreligious dialogue).}
