This tradition is a customary ceremony of significant importance in Madurese society, serving as a final act of respect and a means of offering prayers for the souls of deceased family members. The study primarily focuses on analyzing the perspectives of local religious leaders and village elders regarding this cultural practice, as well as uncovering its underlying symbolic meanings through the lens of George Herbert Mead’s theory of Symbolic Interactionism.
This study employs a qualitative research methodology, specifically field research, focusing on direct data collection at the research site. The study is descriptive-analytical in nature; it aims to describe various phenomena, conditions, and facts encountered in the field and subsequently analyze them in depth to gain a comprehensive understanding aligned with the research objectives. Data were gathered using several techniques: observation to monitor ongoing conditions and activities; documentation to obtain relevant written records and archival materials; and in-depth interviews with informants. The informants included (Islamic scholars) from the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah communities, village elders knowledgeable about local history and traditions, and community figures from Pakamban Daya recognized for their understanding and experience regarding the study's focus.
Research findings indicate that, in the view of village elders, Nyebu Are is not merely a ceremonial event but a manifestation of an heir's utmost devotion to their ancestors and a metaphysical means of communication for conveying prayers or "spiritual energy." From a religious perspective, Kiai (particularly figures associated with Nahdlatul Ulama/NU) regard this tradition as a permissible cultural practice (‘urf) that serves as a medium for dakwah (religious outreach), provided it does not compromise the doctrine of tauhid (divine oneness) or impose an undue economic burden on the family. Theoretically, through the concepts of Mind, Self, and Society, this tradition shapes the social identity of a civilized Madurese community and fosters solidarity; this occurs through symbolic ritual elements such as the deceased's clothing and favorite foods which are interpreted as expressions of care and hopes for salvation in the afterlife. The study concludes that Nyebu Are represents a form of local wisdom that strengthens social and spiritual bonds while simultaneously serving as a medium for character education within the community</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">306.959 865 21 Kehidupan Sosial dan Adat istidat</mods:classification><mods:classification authority="lcc">340.57 Hukum Adat - Indonesia</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-08-03</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS SYARIAH DAN HUKUM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_78854"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_78854_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
