"The phenomenon of Pintaan in the traditional marriage customs of Tanjung\r\nSeteko Village, Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, is a customary practice that\r\ncontinues to be preserved by the local community. Pintaan refers to a request made by the\r\nbride's parents to the prospective groom before the marriage ceremony takes place. In\r\npractice, Pintaan is regarded as a form of respect for the bride's family and a symbol of\r\nthe groom's sincerity and responsibility. However, Pintaan is different from mahr\r\n(dowry). In Islamic law, mahr is a mandatory gift from the prospective husband to the\r\nprospective wife and constitutes one of the wife's rights in marriage, whereas Pintaan is a\r\ncustomary tradition that originates from local social practices and is neither a pillar nor a\r\nlegal requirement for the validity of marriage. Nevertheless, the amount of Pintaan\r\nrequested often gives rise to differing opinions within the community and is sometimes\r\nconsidered burdensome for the groom's family, potentially delaying or hindering\r\nmarriage. Based on this phenomenon, this study addresses three main research questions:\r\n(1) how traditional leaders, religious leaders, and the general public perceive the Pintaan\r\ntradition; (2) how the tradition is analyzed through the perspective of Al-Ghazali's theory\r\nof Maṣlaḥah Mursalah; and (3) how the perspectives of these three groups compare.\r\nAccordingly, this study aims to examine community perspectives on the Pintaan tradition\r\nand to analyze it from the perspective of Maṣlaḥah Mursalah.\r\nThis study is field research using a descriptive qualitative approach and an Usul\r\nFikih approach. Primary data were obtained through interviews with traditional leaders,\r\nreligious leaders, and community members in Tanjung Seteko Village, supported by\r\nobservation and documentation. Secondary data were collected from books, journals, and\r\nliterature related to marriage customs, Islamic law, and the theory of Maslahah Mursalah.\r\nThe data analysis technique used was descriptive-analytical by describing the informants’\r\nviews and then analyzing them using Al-Ghazali’s theory of Maslahah Mursalah.\r\nThe results of the study indicate that traditional leaders view the Pintaan tradition\r\nas a cultural heritage that should be preserved because it reflects respect and strengthens\r\nfamily relationships. Religious leaders argue that the tradition is permissible as long as it\r\ndoes not contradict Islamic law and does not burden the groom’s family. Meanwhile, the\r\ngeneral public holds diverse views; some consider Pintaan a symbol of responsibility and\r\nappreciation for women, while others see excessively high Pintaan as an economic\r\nburden. Based on Al-Ghazali’s theory of Maslahah Mursalah, the Pintaan tradition is\r\nacceptable because it contains values of public benefit, such as maintaining social\r\nrelationships and honoring women, as long as it is practiced reasonably and does not\r\ncause harm. Therefore, the Pintaan tradition can still be preserved as part of community\r\ncustoms as long as its implementation remains in harmony with the principles of public\r\nbenefit and Islamic teachings."^^ .
