This topic is crucial to examine because the differing understandings of Sufism during the formative period of Islam reveal a tension between human spiritual effort and divine grace, particularly on the issues of ri{\d d}{\=a}, nafs, muj{\=a}hadah, and musy{\=a}hadah. This research aims to address two main research questions: how al-Hujw{\=i}r{\=i} critically analyzes the doctrine of al-Mu{\d h}{\=a}sibiyyah, and how he critically analyzes the doctrine of al-Sahliyyah. This study employs a qualitative methodology utilizing library research with a descriptive-analytical approach. The primary source of this research is the text Kasyf al-Ma{\d h}j{\=u}b, while secondary sources consist of relevant books, Sufi literature, historical and philosophical works, and scientific journals. A literature review is conducted to map previous studies while highlighting the position and novelty of this research. The theoretical framework serving as the analytical tool is J{\"u}rgen Habermas?s Critical Theory of Ideology, specifically focusing on critical reflection against unreflectively accepted doctrines to construct a more rational and proportional understanding. The results of the study reveal two main findings. First, al-Hujw{\=i}r{\=i}?s critical study of al-Mu{\d h}{\=a}sibiyyah focuses on the status of ri{\d d}{\=a} as both a maq{\=a}m (station) and a {\d h}{\=a}l (state). Al-Hujw{\=i}r{\=i} positions both perspectives proportionally by distinguishing between God?s ri{\d d}{\=a} toward the servant and the servant?s ri{\d d}{\=a} toward God, thereby establishing an interconnected relationship between mak{\=a}sib as human effort and maw{\=a}hib as divine gifts. Second, his critical study of al-Sahliyyah focuses on nafs, muj{\=a}hadah, riy{\=a}{\d d}ah, and musy{\=a}hadah. Al-Hujw{\=i}r{\=i} does not reject human spiritual effort; rather, he asserts that muj{\=a}hadah must proceed alongside musy{\=a}hadah, as spiritual attainment ultimately relies on God?s success-granting grace (tauf{\=i}q), mercy, and divine will. Consequently, al-Hujw{\=i}r{\=i}?s thought demonstrates an effort to construct a balanced understanding of Sufism between human endeavor and divine grace.} }
