"This study discusses the critical analysis of ‘Alī ibn ‘Uthmān al-Jullābī al-Hujwīrī regarding the doctrines of al-Muḥāsibiyyah and al-Sahliyyah in the book Kasyf al-Maḥjūb. This topic is crucial to examine because the differing understandings of Sufism during the formative period of Islam reveal a tension between human spiritual effort and divine grace, particularly on the issues of riḍā, nafs, mujāhadah, and musyāhadah. This research aims to address two main research questions: how al-Hujwīrī critically analyzes the doctrine of al-Muḥāsibiyyah, and how he critically analyzes the doctrine of al-Sahliyyah.\r\nThis study employs a qualitative methodology utilizing library research with a descriptive-analytical approach. The primary source of this research is the text Kasyf al-Maḥjūb, while secondary sources consist of relevant books, Sufi literature, historical and philosophical works, and scientific journals. A literature review is conducted to map previous studies while highlighting the position and novelty of this research. The theoretical framework serving as the analytical tool is Jürgen Habermas’s Critical Theory of Ideology, specifically focusing on critical reflection against unreflectively accepted doctrines to construct a more rational and proportional understanding.\r\nThe results of the study reveal two main findings. First, al-Hujwīrī’s critical study of al-Muḥāsibiyyah focuses on the status of riḍā as both a maqām (station) and a ḥāl (state). Al-Hujwīrī positions both perspectives proportionally by distinguishing between God’s riḍā toward the servant and the servant’s riḍā toward God, thereby establishing an interconnected relationship between makāsib as human effort and mawāhib as divine gifts. Second, his critical study of al-Sahliyyah focuses on nafs, mujāhadah, riyāḍah, and musyāhadah. Al-Hujwīrī does not reject human spiritual effort; rather, he asserts that mujāhadah must proceed alongside musyāhadah, as spiritual attainment ultimately relies on God’s success-granting grace (taufīq), mercy, and divine will.
