This topic is crucial to examine because the differing understandings of Sufism during the formative period of Islam reveal a tension between human spiritual effort and divine grace, particularly on the issues of ri??, nafs, muj?hadah, and musy?hadah. This research aims to address two main research questions: how al-Hujw?r? critically analyzes the doctrine of al-Mu??sibiyyah, and how he critically analyzes the doctrine of al-Sahliyyah. This study employs a qualitative methodology utilizing library research with a descriptive-analytical approach. The primary source of this research is the text Kasyf al-Ma?j?b, while secondary sources consist of relevant books, Sufi literature, historical and philosophical works, and scientific journals. A literature review is conducted to map previous studies while highlighting the position and novelty of this research. The theoretical framework serving as the analytical tool is Jürgen Habermas?s Critical Theory of Ideology, specifically focusing on critical reflection against unreflectively accepted doctrines to construct a more rational and proportional understanding. The results of the study reveal two main findings. First, al-Hujw?r??s critical study of al-Mu??sibiyyah focuses on the status of ri?? as both a maq?m (station) and a ??l (state). Al-Hujw?r? positions both perspectives proportionally by distinguishing between God?s ri?? toward the servant and the servant?s ri?? toward God, thereby establishing an interconnected relationship between mak?sib as human effort and maw?hib as divine gifts. Second, his critical study of al-Sahliyyah focuses on nafs, muj?hadah, riy??ah, and musy?hadah. Al-Hujw?r? does not reject human spiritual effort; rather, he asserts that muj?hadah must proceed alongside musy?hadah, as spiritual attainment ultimately relies on God?s success-granting grace (tauf?q), mercy, and divine will. Consequently, al-Hujw?r??s thought demonstrates an effort to construct a balanced understanding of Sufism between human endeavor and divine grace.
