Film studies on existential crisis have so far been predominantly examined through the framework of Western existentialism, such as the thought of Sartre and Heidegger, while the tradition of Islamic philosophy—particularly the thought of Muhammad Iqbal—has not received adequate attention as an analytical tool in cinematic studies. The problem formulation of this research focuses on how existential crisis is depicted in the film Dead Poets Society and how Muhammad Iqbal's philosophical thought can address this issue. This research aims to formulate the philosophical foundation of adolescent existential crisis, examined through the analytical lens of the concept of khudi (self/ego), Islam as the foundation of life, and insan kamil (the perfect human) as conceived by Muhammad Iqbal.
The research method employed is library research with a descriptive-analytical approach. The primary data source refers to the film Dead Poets Society (1989) by Peter Weir as the material object, along with the authoritative works of Muhammad Iqbal, particularly The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam, Asrar-i Khudi, and Javid Nama, which are analyzed using descriptive, interpretative, and reflective methods to situate this thought within the context of adolescent existential crisis.
The research results show that the existential crisis in this film is depicted through three interrelated layers: (1) the identity crisis experienced by Neil Perry due to paternal authority domination; (2) the affection and recognition crisis experienced by Todd Anderson due to the absence of family affection; and (3) the freedom of expression crisis experienced by Charlie Dalton due to institutional repression at school. This research, after being examined and analyzed using Muhammad Iqbal's concept of khudi, can be concluded into several parts: (1) the recognition and reinforcement of the self (khudi) as a way out of the identity crisis;
(2) liberation from debilitating submission through the principle of tawhid as a response to the repression of authority; and (3) the movement toward wholeness of the self as insan kamil as the ultimate goal of the existential journey. Its implication is that the adolescent existential crisis depicted in this film, although set in the Western world of the 1950s, is in fact universal in nature and can be read more richly through the framework of Islamic philosophy, making it relevant as a foundation for the character education of Muslim youth oriented toward strengthening self-awareness and spiritual independence.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.261 Islam dan Filsafat, Filsafat Islam</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-06-30</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_79075"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_79075_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
