Peatlands save 30 percent carbon in the earth surface that plays important roles in hydrological functions, the global carbon cycle and biodiversity maintenance. The burnt peatlands release C02 to the atmosfer. Additionally, emissions from multi useful peatlands such as agriculture and extraction for fuel have also contributed to the increase of CO2 level. CO2 is one of the greenhouse gases - i. as destroyed by fires during the period of 1997-2006. Eased on these data, the present study reveals that during this period a total of 1,3 billion tons of CO2 have been released to the atmosphere. Therefore, the phenomenon has led to the increase of the earth surface's temperature. It means Indonesia's peatlands have a significant contribution to the global warming.
