Differences in historical periods and social contexts have influenced the questions raised regarding the verse as well as the ways in which exegetes understand the message it conveys. In the contemporary modern era, women’s experiences have become a focal point in understanding the verse. In the development of contemporary exegesis, interpretations have emerged that seek to broaden the scope of the verse’s message by taking into account women’s experiences regarding polygamy. This study aims to analyze Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir’s application of the principle of reciprocity (mubādalah) in his exegesis of QS. al-Nisā’ [4]:3, as well as its contribution to the discourse on the exegesis of the verse on polygamy. This study is a library-based research using a descriptive-analytical approach. The primary source of this study is the book Qirā’ah Mubādalah by Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir, while secondary sources consist of pre-modern and modern exegetical literature, as well as literature supporting the research.
The results of this study show that: 1) The principle of reciprocity (mubādalah) is applied by identifying the main ideas in Surah al-Nisā’ [4]:3, namely, caution regarding marriages that have the potential to lead to injustice and the protection of orphans. These two ideas are then applied reciprocally to both men and women. Caution regarding risky marriages is directed not only at men but also at women (tabdil bi al-inats). Similarly, the protection of orphans is also directed at women (tabdil bi al-inats), which, in the context of the verse, can be achieved through adoption. In its current application, this can be understood as a shared responsibility that can be realized in various forms of social protection. Furthermore, the mubādalah perspective is also applied to the contemporary issue of polygamy, resulting in the interpretation that patience and fidelity are also required of men (tabdil bi al-dzukur) as reciprocal values, the recognition of women’s right to refuse polygamy, and divorce as an option recognized by the Qur’an when marriage no longer serves the common good. 2) Faqihuddin’s interpretive contribution is evident in two aspects. First, methodologically, he builds upon ideas present in earlier interpretations by expanding the subject matter of the verse’s message through tabdil bi al-inats and tabdil bi al-dzukur. Second, in terms of application, he connects the verse’s message to women’s experiences in interpreting contemporary narratives of polygamy. In terms of ensuring the protection of orphans, this responsibility is expanded to include the government system. Therefore, Faqihuddin’s interpretation demonstrates continuity with previous exegetical discourse while also representing an advancement in broadening the scope of interpretation and actualizing the message of QS. al-Nisā’[4]:3 in the context of contemporary marital relationships.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.1226 Tafsir Al-Qur'an, Ilmu Tafsir</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-08-18</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_79101"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_79101_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
