      "abstract": "Cultural tourism in Bali pushes traditional religious practices into the market\r\nsphere. When the domestic area of Puri Agung Karangasem opened as a tourist destination,\r\nthe mebanten ritual faced tension between its internal religious function and the demands\r\nof the tourism industry. This study aims to describe the practice of mebanten within the\r\nfamily of Puri Agung Karangasem in the context of Balinese tourism and to analyze the\r\ncommodification process affecting that practice.\r\nThe study uses a qualitative approach with a field research design. The researcher\r\ncollected data through passive participatory observation, interviews with ten people\r\nrepresenting various segments, namely two core members of the Puri Agung Karangasem\r\nfamily, one puri figure holding customary authority, two pemangku or ritual performers,\r\ntwo women who make banten, one puri manager connected to tourism activities, one\r\ncultural tour guide, and one local resident involved in ritual activities, along with\r\ndocumentation. Data analysis followed the stages of data reduction, data display, and\r\nverification and conclusion drawing, using Pattana Kitiarsa's theory of religious\r\ncommodification as the analytical framework.\r\nThe findings reveal two main points. First, mebanten is still performed under strict\r\ncustomary structures and rules amid the presence of tourists. The puri manages visitor flow\r\nand applies ethical regulations so that daily rituals continue without losing their authentic\r\nform and religious meaning. Second, the commodification of mebanten operates as a\r\nnegotiation between sacred value and economic value, not as a dissolution of sacredness.\r\nThis process appears across four dimensions: spatial commodification through selective\r\ncuration, the commoditization of ritual objects at the surface commercial layer, customary\r\nauthority as a three-node control mechanism, and the consumption of religious experience\r\nthat transforms exchange value into spiritual use-value. The study concludes that religious\r\ncommodification does not always signal the decline of sacred value. Traditional institutions\r\nhold the agency to open a surface layer for tourist consumption while preserving the\r\ntheological core of the ritual, allowing sacred and economic values to coexist through\r\nmanagement rooted in tradition.",
