sphere. When the domestic area of Puri Agung Karangasem opened as a tourist destination,
the mebanten ritual faced tension between its internal religious function and the demands
of the tourism industry. This study aims to describe the practice of mebanten within the
family of Puri Agung Karangasem in the context of Balinese tourism and to analyze the
commodification process affecting that practice.
The study uses a qualitative approach with a field research design. The researcher
collected data through passive participatory observation, interviews with ten people
representing various segments, namely two core members of the Puri Agung Karangasem
family, one puri figure holding customary authority, two pemangku or ritual performers,
two women who make banten, one puri manager connected to tourism activities, one
cultural tour guide, and one local resident involved in ritual activities, along with
documentation. Data analysis followed the stages of data reduction, data display, and
verification and conclusion drawing, using Pattana Kitiarsa's theory of religious
commodification as the analytical framework.
The findings reveal two main points. First, mebanten is still performed under strict
customary structures and rules amid the presence of tourists. The puri manages visitor flow
and applies ethical regulations so that daily rituals continue without losing their authentic
form and religious meaning. Second, the commodification of mebanten operates as a
negotiation between sacred value and economic value, not as a dissolution of sacredness.
This process appears across four dimensions: spatial commodification through selective
curation, the commoditization of ritual objects at the surface commercial layer, customary
authority as a three-node control mechanism, and the consumption of religious experience
that transforms exchange value into spiritual use-value. The study concludes that religious
commodification does not always signal the decline of sacred value. Traditional institutions
hold the agency to open a surface layer for tourist consumption while preserving the
theological core of the ritual, allowing sacred and economic values to coexist through
management rooted in tradition.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">201.7 Agama - Sosial Budaya</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-08-03</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mods:mods>
