This study examined the relationship between positive religious coping, self-esteem, and anxiety levels among prisoners at the Class II A Narcotics Correctional Institution in Yogyakarta. A quantitative correlational (ex post facto) design was used, involving 151 male prisoners selected through accidental sampling. Anxiety was measured with the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), positive religious coping with the positive dimension of the Brief RCOPE, and self-esteem with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Data were analyzed using Spearman’s Rho correlation for the minor hypotheses and multiple correlation analysis for the major hypothesis, since the normality assumption was not met (Shapiro-Wilk, p < .001). Results showed that positive religious coping was negatively and significantly correlated with anxiety (r = -.647, p < .001), and self-esteem was also negatively and significantly correlated with anxiety (r = -.672, p < .001). Together, the two variables were significantly correlated with anxiety (R = .702, R² = .492, F(2,148) = 71.8, p < .001), explaining 49.2% of the variance in anxiety scores. A very high correlation between the two predictors (r = .913) indicated multicollinearity, so their unique parametric contributions could not be reliably interpreted. These findings indicate that positive religious coping and self-esteem function as complementary psychological resources that may protect prisoners against anxiety, supporting correctional programs that combine religious guidance with self-esteem-building interventions. date: 2026-07-15 date_type: published publisher: CV.
