access to the lives of public figures and contributed to the development of celebrity
worship, a form of attachment to celebrities that varies in intensity from
entertainment-social and intense-personal to borderline-pathological. At higher
levels of intensity, such attachment may be associated with fanaticism, consumptive
behavior, imitation, and excessive emotional involvement. This study aims to
address three main issues: the authenticity of the hadith concerning the prohibition
of excessive praise, its interpretation based on Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s method of
hadith understanding, and its contextualization within the phenomenon of celebrity
worship through parasocial relationship theory.
This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using library
research. The analysis consists of hadith tracing (takhrij), sanad comparison
(i‘tibār), sanad and matn criticism, followed by the application of six principles of
hadith understanding proposed by Yusuf al-Qardhawi: interpreting hadith in light
of the Qur’an, collecting thematically related hadiths, reconciling apparently
contradictory narrations, considering the context of the hadith, distinguishing
literal and figurative meanings, and ensuring the accuracy of lexical meanings.
The findings show that the hadith is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) and may serve as
authoritative evidence. It does not prohibit all forms of praise, but sets limits on
praise that contains iṭrā’, or exaggeration beyond proper bounds. In the context of
celebrity worship, the hadith functions as a normative boundary preventing
admiration from developing into excessive glorification, while emotional
attachment and its psychological effects are explained through parasocial
relationship theory.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.125 Hadis</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-08-20</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mods:mods>
