The research focuses on the role of Mandailing ulama (Islamic scholars) in establishing Islamic intellectual networks spanning both global and local scales through rihlah ilmiyyah (scholarly journeys) and academic productivity, thereby generating distinctive intellectual outputs and unique interpretive styles, particularly within the field of Hadith. A central figure in this context is Syekh Abdul Qadir bin Sabir al-Mandilī (1862–1933 CE), known as shaykh al-shuyūkh (teacher of teachers)who served as a "nodal point" within the constellation of scholar networks; he was the central figure from whom the sanad (chain of intellectual transmission) flowed, genealogically connecting his students and subsequent generations. One such figure is Syekh Abdul Qadir bin Abdul Muthalib al-Mandilī (1910–1965 CE), who possessed an extensive intellectual network and a complex genealogical lineage. This qualitative study utilizes primary and secondary literary sources (classical texts, books, and scholarly articles) supplemented by field observations in Malaysia and Medan. Employing genealogical and historiographical approaches, the study addresses two research questions: (1) how the intellectual networks of Mandailing scholars were formed and who the key figures contributing to the Hadith tradition in North Sumatra were; and (2) how Hadith-related intellectual outputs were compiled, classified, and represented within the Mandailing scholarly tradition, including the specific characteristics of their writing styles.
