abstract: This study examines the socio-religious transformation of the Muslim community in Batam during the period of 1973–1999 CE, a transitional era when the once homogeneous, Malay-Islam coastal society evolved into a multiethnic and multicultural community as a result of large-scale industrialization and urbanization. The New Order government’s policy to designate Batam as a strategic industrial and trade zone triggered massive migration, economic growth, and significant social transformation. Employing historical methods and a sociological approach, this research explores the socio-religious conditions before industrialization, changes during the early development phase, and the intensive developments of the late 1990s.
The findings reveal a shift in lifestyle from traditional-communal to urban-modern, transformations in religious institutions, and processes of adaptation and resistance within the Malay-Islamic culture amid pluralism and modernization. While modernization brought economic growth, infrastructure development, and employment opportunities, it also posed serious challenges to the preservation of local identity and the religious values of the Malay-Muslim community in Batam.
