design of the public library building of the Library and Archives Service of the
Special Region of Yogyakarta (DPAD DIY), and to examine the extent to which this
implementation aligns with the principles of neo-vernacular architecture. Using a
descriptive qualitative research method with data collection techniques including
observation, interviews, and documentation, the findings reveal that Javanese
culture is manifested through symbolic and visual elements integrated into the
building’s architecture. The design of Grhatama Pustaka is inspired by the
philosophy of the Bedhaya Harjuna Wijaya dance and the mancapat concept,
expressed in four minarets symbolizing four noble Javanese values: Prakasa
(resilience), Wulung (learning), Agung (dignity), and Wewangian (beneficence).
Additionally, bronze pillars are adorned with Javanese script (aksara Jawa),
traditional proverbs (sanepo), and distinctive Yogyakarta batik motifs such as
kawung and truntum, serving not only as aesthetic features but also as cultural
education media. The building’s facade, natural lighting, and use of local materials
further strengthen local identity and user comfort. Analysis shows that the design
aligns well with the principles of neo-vernacular architecture, particularly in terms
of contextualism, symbolism, reinterpretation of traditional forms, and community
involvement. Thus, the library successfully functions as a public space that is not
only practical but also serves as a platform for cultural preservation and local
identity in the modern era.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">727.8 Gedung Perpustakaan</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2025-07-16</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS ADAB DAN ILMU BUDAYA</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mods:mods>
