      "abstract": "This research examines the linguistic landscape of cafes and restaurants\r\nin Yogyakarta, focusing on the use of English in their signage to understand\r\nhow language functions as both an informational and a symbolic tool that\r\nreflects social and cultural dynamics. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach,\r\nthis research collected data from 25 establishments across five different public\r\nareas: universities, Islamic boarding schools, shopping centers, tourist areas,\r\nand transportation areas. The findings indicate that all signs analyzed are\r\n\"bottom-up\" signs created by private business owners, where the socio-cultural\r\ncontext of the location heavily influences their function. In shopping centers\r\nand transportation areas, signage tends to be more informational, providing\r\nefficient clarity about the products. The findings indicate that all signs\r\nanalyzed are \"bottom-up\" signs created by private business owners, where the\r\nsocio-cultural context of the location heavily influences their function. Conversely, in\r\nuniversity and tourist areas, naming highlights a stronger symbolic function,\r\nusing creative language to attract specific audiences and build a modern\r\nidentity. Meanwhile, in the Islamic boarding school area, naming tends to be\r\nsimpler and more neutral, reflecting cultural sensitivity and respect. This\r\nresearch concludes that the use of English on signage is a deliberate and\r\nstrategic choice, not only for functional purposes but also to project an image\r\nof modernity, cosmopolitanism, and brand power. This ultimately contributes\r\nto a deeper understanding of how language shapes public spaces and cultural\r\nidentity in a constantly changing urban environment.",
