This novel not only presents a life story, but is also full of linguistic expressions that reflect the emotions, attitudes, and views of its characters. So far, the study of pragmatics in modern Arabic literature, especially related to expressive speech acts, is still relatively limited. Most previous studies have focused more on the analysis of directive or representative speech acts, while the expressive dimension that is closely related to emotional aspects and social relations has received less attention. This is the research gap that is intended to be bridged. The purpose of this study is to describe the form, function, and meaning of expressive speech acts in the novel, while also revealing their contribution to characterization and the dynamics of the plot. This study uses a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. Data in the form of dialogue excerpts containing expressive speech acts are classified and analyzed based on Searle's speech act theory and other pragmatic frameworks. The research results show that expressive speech acts in this novel encompass various forms, including expressions of gratitude, apologies, complaints, criticism, anger, and praise. These functions demonstrate how language serves as a means of emotional expression as well as an instrument for shaping social relations between characters. The analysis also confirms that the use of expressive speech acts is a crucial element in emphasizing patriarchal dominance, inner conflict, and the psychological dynamics of the characters, particularly Milad as the central figure.
Thus, this research contributes to enriching the study of the pragmatics of modern Arabic literature, particularly the previously under-recognized expressive aspects. Furthermore, the findings can serve as a reference for understanding the relationship between language, culture, and power relations in literary works.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">892.7309 Analisis - Kesusastraan Arab</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2025-07-28</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS ADAB DAN ILMU BUDAYA</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_79395"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_79395_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
