The management of the hiking trail aims not only to preserve the forest ecosystem but also to empower the local community by improving its economic welfare. The success of this management is closely related to the existence of social capital, which serves as the foundation for cooperation among community members. This study aims to examine the role of the Forest Farmer Group in managing the Mount Merbabu hiking trail, analyze the management strategies implemented, and explain the role of social capital in supporting the management process. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving the administrators and members of the Forest Farmer Group in Suwanting Hamlet. The data were analyzed using Robert D. Putnam's Social Capital Theory, which emphasizes the elements of trust, social networks, and social norms. The findings indicate that social capital plays a significant role in the management of the Mount Merbabu hiking trail. This role is reflected in the Forest Farmer Group's functions as the manager of the hiking trail, a liaison among stakeholders, a provider of facilities and services, a supervisor of operational activities, a driver of the local economy, and an agent of community empowerment. The trust, social networks, and social norms established within the group are the key factors supporting sustainable hiking trail management while contributing to the economic welfare of the people of Suwanting Hamlet. %Z Dr. Napsiah, S.Sos., M.Si
