functions as a form of educational and spiritual guidance aimed at fostering moral
consciousness among students (santri). However, disciplinary enforcement at
Pondok Pesantren An-Nur Mojolawaran, Gabus, Pati, shows a shift from religious
and educational tasks such as reciting the Quran and memorizing classical texts
toward monetary penalties (ta’zir bil mal). This study examines the
commodification of religious values within student disciplinary practices, the
underlying factors behind this policy, and its psychosocial implications for the
students. Using a qualitative case-study approach, the research draws upon the
theoretical frameworks of commodification and social control theory. Data were
gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the school
leadership, student council boards, and students, an analysis of institutional
disciplinary documents, and open-ended questionnaires. The findings indicate that
the imposition of financial fines has altered students' perception of discipline,
shifting the meaning of obedience from intrinsic moral reflection to a transactional
exchange. Some students display pseudo-compliance, viewing rule infractions as
manageable consequences that can simply be resolved through money. This system
emerged primarily as a pragmatic mechanism for the student administrators to
maintain order amidst tight daily schedules, while responding to the declining
deterrence of conventional verbal warnings. Although the collected penalty funds
are ultimately redirected to support shared communal facilities, the reliance on
monetary sanctions (ta’zir bil mal) creates a perceived sense of disparity among
students with limited financial means. Consequently, reaffirming direct moral rolemodeling
and empathetic mentorship remains essential to preserving the core
character-building values of the pesantren.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.77 Pendidikan Agama Islam (Sekolah Islam, Pondok Pesantren, TPA, TPQ)</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-08-21</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS DAKWAH DAN KOMUNIKASI</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mods:mods>
