"The practice of takziran in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) essentially\r\nfunctions as a form of educational and spiritual guidance aimed at fostering moral\r\nconsciousness among students (santri). However, disciplinary enforcement at\r\nPondok Pesantren An-Nur Mojolawaran, Gabus, Pati, shows a shift from religious\r\nand educational tasks such as reciting the Quran and memorizing classical texts\r\ntoward monetary penalties (ta’zir bil mal). This study examines the\r\ncommodification of religious values within student disciplinary practices, the\r\nunderlying factors behind this policy, and its psychosocial implications for the\r\nstudents. Using a qualitative case-study approach, the research draws upon the\r\ntheoretical frameworks of commodification and social control theory. Data were\r\ngathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the school\r\nleadership, student council boards, and students, an analysis of institutional\r\ndisciplinary documents, and open-ended questionnaires. The findings indicate that\r\nthe imposition of financial fines has altered students' perception of discipline,\r\nshifting the meaning of obedience from intrinsic moral reflection to a transactional\r\nexchange. Some students display pseudo-compliance, viewing rule infractions as\r\nmanageable consequences that can simply be resolved through money. This system\r\nemerged primarily as a pragmatic mechanism for the student administrators to\r\nmaintain order amidst tight daily schedules, while responding to the declining\r\ndeterrence of conventional verbal warnings. Although the collected penalty funds\r\nare ultimately redirected to support shared communal facilities, the reliance on\r\nmonetary sanctions (ta’zir bil mal) creates a perceived sense of disparity among\r\nstudents with limited financial means. Consequently, reaffirming direct moral rolemodeling\r\nand empathetic mentorship remains essential to preserving the core\r\ncharacter-building values of the pesantren."^^ . "2026-08-21" . . . .
