The diversity of religious content available provides santri with opportunities to gain broader religious knowledge, while at the same time requiring the ability to select, understand, verify, and critically evaluate information. This is particularly important in the context of PPM MA Miftahunnajah Sleman, which has santri with diverse backgrounds in religious understanding. This study aims to analyze santri’s social media literacy in accessing religious content on Instagram and to explain its role in strengthening religious moderation attitudes.
This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving 14 informants consisting of male and female santri, the vice principal for student affairs, madrasah teachers, and dormitory caregivers. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. This study employs W. James Potter’s media literacy theory, which encompasses personal locus, knowledge structures, and skills; David Buckingham’s critical media literacy theory, which includes production, language, representation, and audience; Stuart Hall’s Encoding-Decoding theory; and the concept of religious moderation developed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
The findings show that santri possess social media literacy skills in accessing and interpreting religious content on Instagram. Santri are not only able to access and select content according to their needs, but also consider the credibility of sources and conduct verification and evaluation by examining religious evidence (dalil), comparing information with materials learned in the pesantren, seeking additional references, and confirming information with teachers or caregivers. In interpreting religious
content, santri demonstrate dominant, negotiated, and oppositional positions as conceptualized in Stuart Hall’s Encoding-Decoding theory, with a tendency toward the negotiated position. These literacy skills play a role in developing santri’s critical attitudes, openness to differences in religious perspectives, and ability to avoid accepting religious information uncritically. This strengthening is reflected in attitudes of tolerance, non-violence, national commitment, and accommodation of diversity. Thus, social media literacy in accessing religious content on Instagram plays a role in strengthening santri’s religious moderation through their ability to filter, evaluate, and critically interpret religious messages.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">302.231 Media Komunikasi, Media Massa, Media Sosial</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-07-22</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS DAKWAH DAN KOMUNIKASI</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_79526"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_79526_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
